The light, lives and plots of contemporary mumbai, of the working class, are explored and celebrated by the writer/director Payal Kapadia, who won the first prize at the Cannes of this year the Film Festival for her debut in the revealing narrative. Focused on two roommates who also work together in a city hospital-in-headed nurse (Kani Kusruti) and the recent Anu rental (Divya Prabha)-Oltre to their colleague, Cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), the film by Kapadia approached moments of connection and anguish, hope and disappointment. Prabha, her husband of an organized wedding who lives in distant Germany, is courted by a doctor in his hospital; Anu brings a love story with a Muslim man, who must maintain a secret from his severe Hindu family; Parvaty finds himself managing a sudden eviction from his apartment. Kapadia captures the hustle and bustle of the metropolis and the outdoor tranquility of a village on the sea with equal brightness, articulated by its superb actresses and by the camera with a lyrical naturalism that occasionally moves into dreamlike incandescent. Everything we imagine as light is a study full of feeling of the transformative power of friendship and sisterhood, in all its complexities and wealth.
